The Scottish Government is providing continued support to the John Muir Trust to help engage people with science and nature through its John Muir Award scheme.
The £10,000 grant was made through the Scottish Government’s Talking Science programme, which aims to support people’s connection with science, technology and engineering, and broaden understanding of the role that science plays in our everyday lives. The grant will help the Trust engage hard-to-reach groups with environmental and citizen science activities through the John Muir Award.
Toby Clark, the John Muir Award Scotland Manager, said: “This is great news and a welcome endorsement of the work we do to ensure that social circumstances don’t exclude people from experiencing wild places and learning about the science of nature in a spirit of fun and adventure.
“Observing the world around us as John Muir did, and gaining understanding of the infinite beauty and complexity of nature, is a great start on the road to discovery for would-be scientists. We’re glad the Scottish Government recognises that our future scientists and conservationists may come from all sectors of society, and is choosing to continue to support our work.”
Alasdair Allan, Minister for Learning, Science and Scotland’s Languages, said: "Talking Science grants have given thousands of people, all across Scotland, the chance to discover science and the impact it has on our everyday lives since they were introduced in 2012. They have helped events get to venues off the beaten path to communities and groups that previously have had few, if any, opportunities to engage with science in a fun and exciting way.
“The work the John Muir Trust is doing is a great example of how locations and landscapes can challenge the audience to look at their surroundings differently. The team are helping to give audiences from all walks of life fascinating insights about the things around us and how the science of nature works. We are delighted to continue to support this good work that not only showcases exciting facts but encourages people to care for the environment.”
