A unique exhibition by landscape painter Keith Salmon – who is registered blind – is now on display in the John Muir Trust’s Wild Space visitor centre in Pitlochry.

‘All Four Seasons’ offers a new perspective on some of Scotland’s mountains, including some well-known Perthshire landmarks, such as Ben Vrackie on the edge of Pitlochry, and Rannoch Moor.

“My work is based almost entirely on the walks I do over the wild Scottish mountains, through the glens and around the coastlines,” says Keith. “My partner Anita and I walk these places throughout the year and experience them under all sorts of conditions. The constant changes in atmosphere, light and colour are what make the Scottish landscape so special.”

Keith’s ability to pursue his twin passions of hillwalking and painting were almost ended in his 20s when his sight began to fail. He has since experimented with novel ways of working that enable him to produce visual art with very limited vision.

“I have tried to explore my new and changing view. Although still based on places known to me, the images I produce are becoming more distorted and broken. My drawings, built from numerous coloured lines woven together, are more like organised scribbles.”

Keith has developed into an acclaimed semi-abstract artist, winning the prestigious Jolomo Award for Scottish Landscape Painting in 2009.

Now in his mid-50s, he says his paintings have become thicker over time: “At times, the paint is almost bludgeoned into place. The surface is scraped and re-built forming overlapping layers of colour and glimpsed highlights of line and form.”

Subjects in his latest show range from views of Ben Loyal in the far north to the gentler, southern slopes of the Pentland Hills.

By using acrylic and pastel, or more traditional oil colours, Keith’s paintings capture a little of what it is like to get away from the roads and into these beautiful, quiet and sometimes isolated locations.
