Wild Moment: Rex EckleyPublished: 18th October 2016
Early September 2016 saw six Southern Area members of the Trust enjoy a walk led by Rex Eckley
Leaving the car park at the Tafarn-Y-Garreg public house, the day started with a stiff climb up to the Fan Hir ridge and into the cloud base. The resulting airy walk was memorable for the complete lack of any views due to the low cloud.
A final short stiff ascent led to the summit of Fan Brycheinog (at 802m the highest summit in the Black Mountain or Carmarthen Fans). After a rather hurried lunch in the circular stone shelter on the summit due to the low temperature, we descended to Bwlch Giedd and then down to Llyn y Fan Fawr.
The improving weather finally allowed good views across to the Central Beacons as the walk followed the lateral moraine beneath the impressive Fan Hir escarpment and back to the car park.
