Wild Moment: Jason Conway

Jason Conway shares a poem about a favourite spot in the Forest of Dean, the Seven Sisters Rocks*, that he has visited many times for relaxation and creative inspiration.

On a resting rock at the foot of the Seven Sisters

sits a traveller deep in thought
on velvet moss and lichen weaves
who stares into a woodland
patchwork of light and leaf

Drifts of thought meander
through branch lined windows
as slow breath fills a chest
laced with bluebells and wild garlic

A spell of phytoncides bathe
a seeker in an invisible sea
where science and magic merge
As feet set root to rusted mast

ears net the scamper of squirrels
leaf rustle and lone bee hum
as birdsong floats over the Severn
Far from synthetic matters

Cernunnos tames the mind
as a fox slinks by; a bridge
to the spirit of this place
This wild of shifting states
