Our position on planning applications

At the John Muir Trust, we exist to protect and restore wild places for the benefit of nature, climate and people.

We sometimes comment on or object to planning applications where developments could have serious impacts on the landscapes we care for — but we do so selectively and based on clear criteria.

We will comment or object on the following:

On land we own or manage

We will object to any planning application on our land unless it directly supports our conservation goals and has been developed in close consultation with us and relevant agencies.

Next to our land

We may comment on or object to proposals next to our land where there is a clear and significant risk to the wild place, biodiversity, or public enjoyment of the place.

Elsewhere

We do not routinely respond to planning applications that are not on or near our land. However, in some cases, we may take a position if:

  • The development is in a wild place or nationally protected landscape, and
  • A statutory body like NatureScot has objected on specific grounds aligned with our mission.

Our focus

Our priority is to speak out when:

  • Wild places are at risk from large-scale or precedent-setting developments
  • The impact on nature, landscape or access is serious and lasting
  • Our involvement can make a real difference

We aim to use our voice responsibly, focusing our efforts where they are most needed.
