Wild Moment: Holly Hayward

Artist Holly Hayward shares her latest work, inspired by a swan rescue.

Ellesmere in Shropshire is renowned for its local meres and wildlife. Our community is wholly reliant upon the voluntary work of Cuan Wildlife Rescue, which responds to urgent requests when our wild birds are most in need. The following was inspired by Cuan's recent safe rescue/release of a male swan and relocation of a separate brood.

Rescue and Release

The space soon cleared
Even though she'd chosen
The least crowded spot
At the quietest time of day
She'd done this before
With or without onlookers
Placing the heavy cargo
Carefully before her
She released the outer straps
Instinctively knowing his next move
She curled her hand
Around the base of his s-shaped neck
With both hearts set on freedom
She swiftly and one-handedly
Removed the outer packaging
No words, no drama
His webbed feet set free
With clearance to try out his wings
The Swan made his way
To the water's edge
And with onlookers watching in awe
He took to the mere
Swimming with speed and grace
Like he'd never been away from these shores.
