Biography

A Lake District resident in Borrowdale. An early passion for the uplands led to a schoolboy completion of the ‘Wainwrights’. Already then it struck me as unusual that the fells were largely bare of trees thus shaping a future career.

As a Lake District National Park Ranger for 23 years I managed the Bassenthwaite Lake National Nature Reserve (NNR) receiving an award from English Nature. I engaged local communities in ‘their’ local NNR and special qualities. This work along with other engagement locally included a raft of habitat improvements and management of the successful return of breeding ospreys resulting in the awarding of a British Empire Medal for services to Lakeland.

Thirty years’ managing projects in environmental restoration including peatland, footpath repairs, upland woodland and rare species protection. Co-managing the Lake District Arcticalpine Project sought to protect and enhance the remnant upland flora and montane woodland of the National Park.

This work continued for seven years as the Glenridding Common land manager for the John Muir Trust. Community and wider engagement is crucial for land management and was successfully exemplified at Helvellyn.
