Nevis conservation days

13 Jun - 4 Oct 2026

Various

Join us to care for Ben Nevis and help protect this iconic mountain for future generations. Our 2026 conservation volunteer days offer a rewarding opportunity to give back, while developing practical upland conservation skills in a truly special place.

Dates

  • Saturday 13 June 2026
  • Saturday 25 July 2026
  • Saturday 3 October 2026

Location

Ben Nevis summit and upper mountain path.

What to expect

Spend a full day in the high hills contributing to essential conservation work. This is a long, strenuous and physically demanding day in exposed, high-altitude terrain and weather conditions. Throughout the day volunteers can expect up to 16 km of walking and 1000-1352m of ascent, carrying tools such as spades, mattocks and bags of litter in a mountain environment.

Volunteers will split into small teams:

  • Pathwork team: develop pathwork skills while supporting vital maintenance on the upper mountain path. Tasks include clearing accumulated stone and silt from cross drains and pitched sections of the path. We will also ‘de-roughen’ sections of the path which include removing larger stones and boulders that have rolled onto the mountain path.
  • Summit litter team: hike to the summit to carry out a thorough litter pick, clearing litter from summit area and carrying this back down off the mountain, collecting further litter on the way.

Itinerary

09:00 Meet at Glen Nevis Visitor Centre car park (toilets available), briefing and kit check.

Morning Begin ascent onto the mountain path, travelling to upper mountain work areas.

Midday–afternoon

  • Pathwork team undertakes maintenance (cross drain clearing, de-roughening).
  • Summit litter team continues to the top for litter collection before descending.

17:00 Return to Glen Nevis Visitor Centre.

Is this for me?

Please only sign up if you are fit and competent in mountainous terrain, and comfortable spending a full day on mountains like Ben Nevis. You should be confident walking long distances and carrying tools in changeable weather conditions.
