Co-opting two new Trustees

The John Muir Trust is the UK’s leading voice for the protection and conservation of wild places in the UK. We have ambitious targets and are now inviting applications for two co-opted Trustees who will bring new skills to the Board of Trustees and help shape our future.

We are seeking to co-opt two Trustees with skills and experience in the area of: 

• Finance in charity, business or public sectors 

We are seeking to appoint new Trustees, preferably individuals who are qualified accountants and have extensive professional experience in the finance sector.

Secondary skills in the following areas would also be advantageous: 

• Governance and compliance in the charity sector
• HR in the charity, business or public sectors
• Income generation and fundraising 

Successful applicants will become full members of the Board from their date of appointment until the AGM in 2027, with the possibility of extending this term by being re-co-opted, or standing for election by the Membership as Trustees. 

Essential criteria: 

• Awareness of the value of Wild Places within the man-made landscapes of the UK. 
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically.  
• Willingness to join the Trust if not currently a member.  
• Ability to commit to the role for an initial period of one year. This involves reading paperwork in advance of attending around seven full-day meetings: four Board meetings, usually in Edinburgh (hybrid format) and three topical discussion meetings (in-person meetings at locations around the UK).  
• Successful candidates may also be asked to join the Finance Committee, the commitment here is four half-day meetings each year usually conducted online.

Next steps

The Trust will review all applications and respond to all those who have applied as soon as possible after the deadline. If you are shortlisted you will be asked to participate in a short online interview to discuss your application. We expect interviews to be held in September in order that the successful candidates are in place by the 2026 AGM (26 September), induction training will be provided shortly after appointment.
