Field Notes: Coventry's Charterhouse sparkles in the rain
Trust Training and Engagement Officer Alison Bucknall reports on an unexpectedly wet and wild event at Charterhouse Heritage Park, Coventry.

In mid-April, we were delighted to welcome a group for a guided walk at Charterhouse Heritage Park. Around 20 people gathered to hear the Trust's Head of Engagement Gareth Morgan share our plans for the future of this special urban green space in the centre of Coventry.
Gareth described our vision of new pathways and bridges to improve accessibility; and new wetland areas aimed at increasing biodiversity and alleviating flood risk from the River Sherbourne. It was great to hear the discussions taking place and the enthusiasm for the project.
A sudden thunderstorm gave us a little more wildness (and wetness!) than we were expecting, but spirits remained high as the group took shelter in one of the Charterhouse tunnels until the downpour passed.
After the walk, we gathered in the Anglican chapel for a welcome hot drink and an interesting and thought-provoking talk from David Balharry, our CEO.

David shared the challenges or ‘conundrums’ faced by wild places today, including land ownership and management, invasive species and shifting baselines. The conversation that followed brought a range of perspectives and experiences with everyone agreeing that wild places, whatever their size or setting, are vital and need protecting.
Despite the downpour, attendees enjoyed the day and showed an interest in future events. Feedback included: “It was very exciting hearing the plans for the park and to spend time in nature. Thanks also to David for a thought-provoking presentation. I look forward to future events at Charterhouse.”
Our series of events continued the following week, when we celebrated both John Muir Day (belatedly) and Earth Day with a guided photography walk at Charterhouse Heritage Park.

Everyone loved taking time to pause and capture their images, appreciating the beauty around us.
