A fond farewell
Trustee Emily Sutton steps down to take on new commitments.

At the Trust’s final Board meeting of 2025, on Thursday 11 December, we wished Trustee Emily Sutton farewell as she moves on from the Board to take up new ventures.
Jane Smallman, Chair, said: “Emily has made a significant impact in the Boardroom and beyond – sharing her technical expertise, writing an article in the Journal around legal rights for nature, and completing the John Muir Award.
"Emily’s energy and commitment have made a real impact, and the Board would like to thank her for all her work and wish her the very best for the future.”
Emily said: “After a rewarding year of service, I will be stepping down from the Board of the John Muir Trust to focus on other commitments, including a new climate and nature focused role for the UK Government. It has been a privilege to contribute to the Trust’s vital mission to protect wild places, and I am encouraged by the positive direction of our policy and advocacy work, and our willing collaboration with partners.
“I hope to have prompted a shift in the income-generation model and membership profile, so that the Trust is equipped to safeguard wild places for future generations. Central to this is demonstrating ambitious, exemplary land management that shows what is possible, and positions the Trust as a leader in shaping policy that protects nature in our care.
“A particular personal milestone during my time with the Trust has been completing the John Muir Award. Engaging so directly with the spirit of exploration, conservation, and sharing that the Award embodies has deepened my commitment to the Trust’s values and reminded me of the transformative impact that connecting with wild places can have on people of all ages.
“It's been brilliant to meet volunteers at working parties and visit our remarkable properties, including Knoydart, Schiehallion, Glenlude. I wish the Trust every success as it continues to look to the future and will remain an active member and passionate advocate for wild places.
