Charterhouse Heritage Park

Coventry's Charterhouse Heritage Park is a wildlife and history-rich, urban oasis, located in the heart of the city beside a medieval monastic house.

Although undermanaged for decades, with some inaccessible areas, Charterhouse Heritage Park is valued by the local community, and we are thrilled to be working on this exciting partnership project to protect it for future generations.

The park’s mosaic of woodland, grassland and wetland, and the River Sherbourne that runs through it, make it a haven for nature and people alike.

What we're doing

This project supports our vision of ‘A world that values wild places, where natural processes thrive, people feel connected to nature, and natural landscapes are protected as an essential part of our shared heritage and future’.

Together with our partners we will be:

  • Improving access and signage to help more people explore and enjoy the park
  • Tackling invasive plant species to allow native wildlife to flourish
  • Creating new opportunities for outdoor learning and volunteering.

Community engagement

It’s great to see the enthusiasm of local community groups, volunteers and school children as they discover the hidden corners of Charterhouse Heritage Park.

With our partners, we’ve already hosted wellbeing walks, river dipping events and sensory awareness sessions and  look forward to engaging thousands more people in the future.

We’re also helping local groups and schools deliver the John Muir Award, encouraging people to discover and care for their own wild places across Coventry.

Key partners

Coventry City Council is the principle land-owner and is committed to the creation of the Charterhouse Heritage Park in its Coventry Local Plan. It is also supporting the project development through the Nature Towns and Cities programme.

National Trust manages and takes care of the Coventry Charterhouse building, walled garden and car park area. Entry to the house and gardens is free for National Trust members. We are working closely with National Trust to provide a special wild place for everyone to enjoy.

Historic Coventry Trust works to restore and revitalise the city’s historic buildings and landscapes, bringing new life to Coventry’s heritage.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust has been delivering the Sherbourne Valley Project since 2022, connecting people with the River Sherbourne and its rich and diverse heritage. At Charterhouse the team have restored river sections and created a new pond area to benefit wildlife and the community. A pond dipping platform and pathway are coming soon!
